“HeOnlyFell” is the story of a young, Black, American woman named Shana who sacrifices her life in the United States after suffering the loss of her mother. Shana uproots the life she had been building to relocate to Nigeria and help care for her family as a means to not only keep them afloat but to keep her mother’s legacy alive. Shana is an American citizen by birth but her mother who was half Nigerian, desired to live her final days in peace in the land she knew as home. As a loving and dedicated daughter, Shana made it her mission to ensure exactly that came to pass. Shana descends from a long line of hard work and strong ethic, to the point that at times she works herself. As unsuspecting luck would have it, Shana becomes acquainted with Akin, the CEO of a thriving tech company in Nigeria.
After failed attempts at love and relationship, Akin has become reserved and skeptical of love. He fills the void left by the lack of companionship with work and fellowshipping with his closest friends. After observing Shana and getting to know her, Akin feels the hope for love being relit inside his heart. While his friends are reluctant to accept Shana as a suitable mate for Akin because of her physical looks and socioeconomic status, all Akin can ask himself is, “Should other’s beliefs about someone’s appearance be an obstacle to his love and happiness?” While one of his friends vehemently believes Shana does not meet the standard for a match, Shana and Akin learn they speak each other’s language.
Through poetry they fully express and understand who the other is in the deepest and most sincere of ways. Making space for a vulnerability they share that the outside world can’t comprehend. Words rooted in love and laced with their fantasies allow what they once only dreamed of to be brought to reality. While the overwhelming emotions feel good, Shana is hesitant because she knows she intends to move back to America, an ocean and continent away from the man she has allowed herself to love. The love they share, neither has ever experienced and the question remains…will fear keep Shana and Akin apart or will their words weave together a tapestry of unconditional love?
