Director Biography - Lisa Z Sherman
As a lifelong lover of stories, Brooklynite Lisa Sherman makes her film and directorial debut with Implosions. After watching a documentary on Walt Disney at age eight, Lisa began a lifelong journey to the worlds of production, learning about famed storytellers such as Joe Ranft, Dave Filoni and S.E. Hinton. By her high school graduation, Lisa had founded her school’s film club, had artwork on display at Centerview Partners through Arts Connection and received her school’s Medal in Art.
As a Macaulay Honors student at Brooklyn College, Sherman continued advancing her studies from in-person instruction and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet it would be the experiences from the pandemic which led to developing her multimedia thesis film Implosions. At the 41st Annual Brooklyn College Film Festival, Implosions was an official selection for the Faculty Showcase, and took home the award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design and the Brooklyn College Film Alumni Association (BCFAA) Award for Best Short Film.
Currently, Sherman provides remote instruction for students worldwide, and produces social media content for New Plaza Cinema, a non-profit theater founded following the closure of the famed Lincoln Plaza Cinema.
Director Statement
Implosions is a film that deals with mental health, something that — while common and okay — is still difficult to discuss. Talking about mental health is important, as it enables us to better understand ourselves and find the support we need. But it’s hard to do, as dealing mental health is like a paper cut that just gets bigger without the right BAND-Aid. Yet as someone whose had their share of big paper cuts, my hope for Implosions is to support people and how we treat ourselves.
Implosions is my first film, but I hope it won’t be my last. I love stories so much, whether I be reading them, watching them, or creating my own. Yet one goal I have in my storytelling is to help people. If I can tell stories that transport audiences and bring them to whole worlds, it’s a dream come true. But if I can also tell stories that teach us, connect us, guide us, empower us, and help us for a greater good, that’s a greater honor.
