Director Biography - MERLIN BABU


Merlin Babu is an Indian short film maker, who is widely recognized for her two short films ‘Laddoo’ (2015) and ‘What Next? ‘(2013). She started her film career in Malayalam film industry as an assistant director in the movie ‘ Once upon a time there was a Kallan’, in 2013. Then she did not have to look back till 2015, when she decided to do her independent feature film. She worked with national award winning director Anil Radhakrishnan Menon, in his two movies, ‘Sapthamasree Thaskaraha’ and ‘Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi’. She also worked with the director-cinematographer Venu in his movie ‘ Munnariyipp’ and with Sidharth Bharathan for ‘ Chandretan Evideya’.In the meantime her short film What Next was winning awards across national and international festivals. It dealt with the prominent issue of indirect child sexual abuse, projected in a different way. Her latest short filmm, Laddoo, is the perspec/ve of an ant which raises many social questions in one’s mind. It won many awards nationally and internationally in 6 months after release and is still being nominated in many international festivals. All aspects of this short film including script, cinematography, music and cuts are widely appreciated by jury in each of the festivals. Perspective of an ant is shot using I phone, and no CG or softwares are used in the portion where the ant is portrayed. The director calls the shoot a great challenge in her life and she has shown justice to the subject.
